Love this film...it's so thought provoking and really beautiful, visually and story-wise. I know some people have a problem with Miike for some reason or another (the comparisons to QT are humorous, considering Miike actually has original ideas), but when he's on his game, there's really no denying the guy is an extremely capable filmmaker that is incredibly versatile.

I really, really dig Miike. He's the only guy around who's making movies in the vein of the 70s Japanese exploitation guys like Teruo Ishii. I don't understand the hate either. I do wonder whether he'd be a better filmmaker if he took more time on his projects though.

A friend of mine keeps bugging me to watch this one but I've been so busy I haven't really had time.

This is definitely one of his more "well rounded" features, one which doesn't leave you feeling lacking.

Yeah, the Ishii comparison is a good one. Honestly though, when Ishii was on the top of his game, he was cranking them out like crazy as well. Then look at his later career when he slowed down, and there's not much of note (Screwed is pretty cool though), although age could certainly have played a factor there.

Watched this last night and really enjoyed it. I certainly am not well versed in Miike's work, but I have seen a few and this is definitely up there.

I really loved the non-linear way he worked through each scene, starting with a reference point and then slowly revealing the idea behind it. I also loved the theatrical style and the minimalist sets (I work in a theatre, so i've come to appreciate this more and more), especially certain elements like the scene where they walk through the 'prison cells' which are merely chalk lines. Very cool.

It made me want to watch it again, which I guess is one of the highest compliments i can give it.
