New & Notable Comic Book Releases: 05/09

A bit under the weather this week, so that’s why this is late. I was debating on not posting it all, since writing isn’t very fun when you have a sinus headache and are blowing your nose every minute, but then I decided I could do things half-assed and just make a short comment and pad things out with the synopsis for each. Better than nothing, right? So, let’s get this over with, the Nyquil is wearing off…

Scott Snyder is writing some of the best Batman stories seen in well over a decade, and if you didn’t jump on board with the debut of the New 52, this collection of the first six issues is yet another opportunity to see what everyone’s been talking about. This also would set you up nicely for the massive Night of the Owls event going on in all of the Batman books this month if you’re ready to jump into the Batman universe with both feet. “Following his groundbreaking, critically acclaimed run on DETECTIVE COMICS, writer Scott Snyder (American Vampire) begins a new era of The Dark Knight with artist Greg Capullo (Spawn) and a new beginning for BATMAN! In this hardcover collecting the first six issues, a series of brutal murders rocks not only Gotham City to its core but also the Caped Crusader himself when the prime suspect is one of Batman’s closest allies – Dick Grayson!”BATMAN VOL. 1: COURT OF THE OWLS HC // $24.99 // DC COMICS

David Lapham is a strange writer; when he’s writing crime, slice-of-life, or superhero comics, he’s great. When he’s writing anything that’s supposed to be gritty and gory, he’s horrible. Luckily, his new ongoing at Avatar (which is where he writes most of the over-the-top gore stuff) sounds like it’s the former and could turn out to be a lot of fun. “Eisner Award winning writer David Lapham delivers a fresh punch to the face with his new ongoing series about crime, family, and being a lazy, yet invulnerable, private detective. Dan is something of a hired man. Whatever one needs doing, be it detective work, muscle work, blackmail work, or bedroom work – Dan’s your man. Dan’s not afraid of anything because Dan’s totally unharmable. You can beat him with sticks, stick him in the oven, throw him off a bridge, or shoot him in his noggin; its all the same to Dan. He’s never met an insult that bothered him or a person he cared about-at least for more than a night. Dan prefers not to be shackled down by worldly goods. He works for just enough dough to keep him in cigs and beer for a night or two, maybe a room, and he’s content. Dan’s bohemian paradise is all about to change, however. You see, back before Dan was so unharmable he left a few loose ends. Now those loose ends are growing up and their mother’s been murdered, which not only means that Dan has to solve his most personal case yet, he’s now legally responsible for four human beings who are anything but unharmable.”DAN THE UNHARMABLE #1 // $3.99 // AVATAR PRESS

The new sci-fi epic from Sam Humphries (Our Love is Real, The Ultimates), you can score the first issue of Higher Earth for a buck. Do I really need to try and persuade you to buy a book for a dollar, you cheap bastards? Well then read this synopsis, which sounds pretty epic. “You Are Illegal On This Earth. Space is dead. Why conquer other planets when there’s a perfectly good Earth in the universe next door? Heidi, a girl born in garbage. Rex, a soldier gone rogue. The only thing between them and their destiny is an empire of a hundred different Earths, across a hundred alternate timelines. One majestic planet dominates them all: Higher Earth. Created and written by Sam Humphries (Fanboys Vs. Zombies) Higher Earth is his sci-fi follow up to last year’s indie hit Our Love Is Real, a fast-paced epic of infinite possibilities.” Did I mention you can get this for a dollar? – HIGHER EARTH #1 // $1.00 // BOOM STUDIOS

I’m always up for a good horror-tinged fairy tale, and Night of 1000 Wolves sounds like it could be one. This one is sort of a shot in the dark for me, as I’m not familiar with writer Bobby Curnow at all, but as I’ve stated in some previous articles, sometimes the unknown can really surprise you. The artwork from Dave Wachter looks beautiful, so fingers crossed that the writing can support it! “In the Dark Ages, the tranquil life of Harrick Benjyon and his family is shattered by unthinkable tragedy. Before they can react, the family find themselves under seige by hordes of wolves with one aim. Death. A race for survival becomes all the more impossible by the arrival of the supernatural… and the dark secrets that lie at the heart of the Benjyon family. Another classic horror tale from the company that brought you 30 Days of Night and Locke & Key!” Mentioning this along with Locke & Key? Let’s hope it can live up to that lofty comparison. – NIGHT OF 1000 WOLVES #1 // $3.99 // IDW

Finally this week, one of the best Silver Surfer stories gets a re-release (sadly it took the death of comic legend Moebius for it to happen), and it’s worthy of every single person’s attention. Easily one of Stan Lee’s finest written stories, and depending on how reverential you are to golden age Marvel, that’s a lofty statement to make, but I sincerely mean it. Moebius’ artwork is fantastic as expected, and even if you’ve never read a Silver Surfer story, there’s no better story to pop your cherry on. “A star falls to earth. Panic grips the planet as mankind prepares for its inevitable end. But the star is a ship, and inside is a god. All he asks is adoration. Overcome with relief, man rushes to obey. There is only one voice of dissent that will not be silenced: the Silver Surfer, who recognizes the ‘god’ as his former master. But why has Galactus encouraged mankind to live down to his darkest nature? From Stan Lee and Moebius, one of France’s living treasures, comes a bewitching tale of man’s folly and nobility.”SILVER SURFER: PARABLE HC // $24.99 // MARVEL COMICS

New & Notable Comic Book Releases: 05/02

This week’s edition features five all new series that kick off this week. Yep, there are five series starting this week that I think are worthy of everyone’s attention. And to be honest, there’s even a few more than this, so check out your local comic shop to see what other new series are starting off this week. But only after you check out all of these, of course!

Probably the book I’m most excited about this week, Dial H sees the comic book debut of writer China Miéville, and if you don’t know that name, you really should. He’s a fantastic writer of twisted fantasy reminiscent of Clive Barker, Neil Gaiman and H.P. Lovecraft. Dial H is one of six books replacing six cancelled titles in DC’s New 52, and is the lone new addition to “The Dark” line of books, which is far and away the most interesting group of books DC is publishing these days. Dial H is a quirky old DC property that deals with something called the H Dial, an ancient artifact in the shape of a phone rotary dial that turns whoever possesses it into a superhero. The handful of incarnations of the title throughout the years have always been filled to the brim with imagination, and in the hands of Miéville, that sense of creative freedom should be a treat. The artwork from Mateus Santolouco looks incredible, and the Brian Bolland covers are what you’d expect: Awesome. If you only have $3 to splurge on a new series this week, Dial H gets my highest recommendation. – DIAL H #1 // $2.99 // DC COMICS

Epic Kill has been floating around for some time, as I initially heard about it over a year ago on creator Raffaele Ienco’s DeviantArt page. The pitch is really simple: as a young girl, Song’s parents were murdered before her eyes. After years of training, she’s now a deadly 18 year old assassins and her exploits have caught the eye of the man responsible for murdering her parents: the President of the United States. Yeah, sounds pretty cool, right? Ienco is sort of unproven in the world of comics, and it’ll be interesting to see how his writing skills are, as his artwork is solid. We’ll also quickly learn whether he can keep up with a monthly release schedule doing all of the work on his own. Just last year we had the breakout hit The Strange Talent of Luther Strode, which was created by two rookies in the world of comics, Justin Jordan and Tradd Moore. Here’s to hoping Epic Kill is this year’s surprise from a virtual unknown. – EPIC KILL #1 // $2.99 // IMAGE COMICS

The second new Image released book this week that’s piqued my interest is Mind the Gap. I’ve read a couple previews, and it looks extremely intriguing. It tells the tale of Elle Peterssen, who is mysteriously attacked on a Manhattan subway platform and left in a coma. Thing is, while her body isn’t dead, her spirit has already left her body. And she has no recollection of what happened to her; it’s all locked in her physical brain. The preview I read was about 10 pages and already was building tons of mystery, including casting doubt on those in her family, weird cell phone calls, and the introduction of an enigmatic hooded man. While Jim McCann has built himself a strong reputation as a good writer, I think a lot of people are excited about Mind the Gap marking the debut of Rodin Esquejo on interior art for a monthly book. If you don’t know the name, take a look at a couple of covers for Morning Glories. You’re excited now, right? If the preview is any indication, Mind the Gap is going to be one of the most beautifully drawn books on the rack every month for the foreseeable future. – MIND THE GAP #1 // $2.99 // IMAGE COMICS

After last month’s relaunch of The Shadow, Dynamite is at it again with yet another pulp hero revival, The Spider. To be honest, I don’t know a lot about the Spider as a character outside of some blurbs I’ve read hyping this series. What I’m excited about is that it’s being written by David Liss. The man knows pulp heroes. His run on Black Panther: The Most Dangerous Man Alive was great and woefully underrated. And his retro Marvel mini-series last year, Mystery Men, was excellent and again sadly mostly ignored by the public at large. If The Spider turns out half as good as either of those, this is going to be a very fun book for fans of pulp/noir superhero stories. From the Dynamite released blurbs, the Spider sounds a lot like what could have been the inspiration for Batman, a wealthy industrialist that is tired of seeing his city destroyed by violence and takes a stand. What makes the Spider different though is he’ll use the same level of violence and barbarity against his enemies. Artwork comes courtesy of Colton Worley, who I’m not really familiar with, but the handful of preview pages I’ve seen for this first issue really impressed. – THE SPIDER #1 // $3.99 // DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT

Finally this week is the first book in the relaunch of a comic book company that anyone that read comics in the 90s will know all about: Valiant. Valiant is one of the reasons for the comic book boom of the 90s. Their titles became super hot, and for a couple of years, they were nipping at DC and Marvel’s heels. They weren’t just “another” indie label looking to cash in. They pretty much invented the idea of variant and gimmick covers, and while we may not want to thank them for that, the simple fact is out of all of the comic book companies that rose to prominence during that era, Valiant easily had the strongest roster of characters and created a wealth of story history. It was a shame that they were so heavily affected when the comic book bubble burst in the late 90s and all of their properties were forced to be shoved in the back of a drawer somewhere, but they’re ready for a comeback. And kicking things off is what I’d personally call their most compelling character and universe, X-O Manowar. Imagine a primitive like Ka-Zar in Iron Man armor fighting waves of spider aliens, and you’ll get an idea of what to expect. The original stories were rich in not only early human history, but also told some great sci-fi tales, and this new incarnation sounds as if it’ll stay along those lines. Writer Rob Venditti (The Surrogates) and artist Cary Nord (Daredevil, Conan) have been given the task of reviving and breathing new life into the character, and if this relaunch turns out anywhere near as good as the shockingly good Extreme relaunch over at Image has been, we’re going to have another line of great monthly comics to add to the pile. – X-O MANOWAR #1 // $3.99 // VALIANT

Indie Film Spotlight: Assassins

Assassins

Remember back about a year ago when I posted a couple films from aspiring director Michael Bonomo? Well, he’s ready to try his hand at a feature-length film in the form of Assassins. Along with writer David Grant, they’re currently raising money for the film on IndieGoGo. Want to know if it’s a project worth throwing a few bucks at in support? Well, how about you check out the short film version that was done to raise awareness? Without further ado….

Think it’s worth seeing a full-length version of? Then help keep indie cinema alive and donate by going to http://www.indiegogo.com/Assassins

New & Notable Comic Book Releases: 04/25

No new series kicking off this week that I feel are worth mentioning, so two new jumping-on points and two graphic novels are highlighted this go around. Read on, fellow geek!

Before Neil Gaiman shot to super-stardom with what many consider the Holy Grail of comics, The Sandman, his first ever work in the U.S. was the reinvention of another quirky character from DC’s past, Black Orchid. And what a reinvention it was. Joined together with long-time collaborator Dave McKean, the two took a character that didn’t have a strong back-story and was generally relegated to niche cameo appearances, and molded her into a compelling addition to the world of DC’s roster of characters that are connected to The Green, a realm which all of the sentient plant elementals have a connection to. And they did this in a matter of three oversized issues. The writing and plot are great and exactly what you would expect from Gaiman, and McKean’s artwork is still just as stunning 25 years later. Sadly, as great as this re-invention was, no one was able to capitalize on the mythos and continue the story along in any notable way; the subsequent ongoing series felt like a poor-man’s Swamp Thing, and then the character quietly faded into the background again. But there’s a reason this mini-series is being re-released: starting next month, Jeff Lemire takes over Justice League Dark, and Black Orchid is slated to be a part of the team. And if anyone can finally build on the potential Gaiman and McKean created for her, he’s the man to do it. If you want a jump-start on the character’s origins, pick this up. – BLACK ORCHID DELUXE EDITION HC // $24.99 // VERTIGO

Taking a cue from the recently launched (and very successful) Avenging Spider-Man, Captain America‘s old numbering (which switched to Captain America & Bucky 9 issues prior to this one) has now become a team-up book reminiscent of the classic Marvel Team-Up title, and if it’s half as fun as Avenging Spider-Man is month in and month out, this is one to keep an eye on. I was definitely bummed to see Captain America & Bucky go, but I guess there’s only so many stories you can tell that haven’t already been told throughout the years (and how many scripts Ed Brubaker can turn in every month), and Bucky fans still get a dose of him every month with the ongoing Winter Soldier. This will also now be a very inviting book to newcomers and fans of the films, as story-arcs will be contained to 2-3 issues and should for the most part be self-contained. Every few issues Cap will team up with a new Avenger or other Marvel superhero, and the initial arc is with Hawkeye (and I suspect the first few arcs will likely stick to other big-screen Avengers), with a script from rising super-star Cullen Bunn (The Sixth Gun) and what should be great artwork courtesy of Alessandro Vitti (Secret Warriors). If you’re out of the Marvel U loop, this should be a safe pick-up to start to ease back in. – CAPTAIN AMERICA & HAWKEYE // $2.99 // MARVEL COMICS

I’m going to preface this pick by saying I have absolutely no idea how this will hold up to those that are new comic book readers and haven’t read anything older than 15 or so years in regards to Marvel superhero books. I also honestly don’t even know how this will hold up for me, as I haven’t read it since it was originally released. What I do know is that I have fond memories of the Darkhawk series, and read it every month when I was a kid. As an adult I’ve always liked to explore the less-known avenues of comics, film, novels, etc., and even back when I was 10 I liked to mix the popular titles with some stuff that wasn’t exactly in the spotlight; I was (and still am) a big fan of lesser-known characters such as Moon Knight, Deathlok, Death’s Head, Sleepwalker, Guardians of the Galaxy, and yes, Darkhawk. This volume contains the first 9 issues of the series, which will include the origins of Chris Powell, his discovery of an alien amulet that transforms him into Darkhawk, and his quest to avenge his father’s death, among other stories. In recent times the character has been used as a focal points to a couple of Marvel’s cosmic epics, such as Reign of Kings. But until then, little was heard from the character. If you’re intimidated by the decades upon decades of history some characters have, Darkhawk is a Marvel superhero that isn’t weighed down by tons of continuity baggage, so you can jump right in from the beginning and not worry about consuming hundreds of issues to see all of his adventures. Let’s just hope Marvel has plans to collect all 50 issues. – DARKHAWK CLASSIC VOL. 01 TPB // $24.99 // MARVEL COMICS

After a nearly three year run with Wolvie, Jason Aaron hands the reigns of the most feral Marvel hero over to Cullen Bunn (who’s also writing Captain America & Hawkeye this week). This is being billed as a new jumping-on point for readers, but there was a bit of foreshadowing leading up to this story. But I’m here to help! All you really need to know is there’s a character that was introduced a couple years ago called Dr. Rot. Think of him as Marvel’s answer to Herbert West, but even more twisted. Well, he’s been in Wolverine’s brain and Wolvie’s starting to black out and see all sorts of weird shit (like talking to a person and then seeing them as a mangled lump of talking flesh). This story arc is apparently a battle over the control of Wolverine’s brain. C’mon, tell me that doesn’t sound cool? And the biggest plus about jumping on? The book does not appear to be crossing over into the big Avengers vs. X-Men event, at least through issue #309 in July (which is the newest issue that’s been solicited as of this posting). I’m trying to introduce people to inviting stories that don’t require tons of other books to understand, which is a hard thing to do when it comes to Marvel, but all indications point to this being one of the few. – WOLVERINE #305 // $3.99 // MARVEL COMICS

New & Notable Comic Book Releases: 04/18

A lighter week this week with only three picks, but my main goal of this article is to reach those not currently totally entrenched in all-things comic books and I only want to choose titles that a newcomer can understand, so I’ll be picking mostly new series, new jumping-on points, and trades. While there’s certainly a ton of good stuff coming out this week, the majority of it isn’t newbie friendly. Still, the three books highlighted this week should be strong ones.

The solo ongoing series I’m spotlighting this week is Dynamite’s relaunch of The Shadow property under the watchful eye of Garth Ennis. Dynamite has been successful relaunching older pulp comic book properties in the past, and I have a feeling The Shadow will be the next to join those ranks. There’s some questions looming from some whether Ennis is the right fit for writing new Shadow stories, assuming the series is going to be full of cursing, backwoods hillbillies and extreme violence. But the mere fact that the series is staying set in the 1930s should alleviate any worries these people may have. I’d also point out that Ennis has done a lot of work that doesn’t fall into offensive, violence-fueled territory (Hitman and Hellblazer, anyone?), it’s just the more extreme fare seems to be more popular. Aaron Campbell provides the artwork for the series, and while I’ve only seen some of his cover work, I think he’ll be a good fit as his cover art indicates that he relies heavily on moody shadows and shading. If you dig pulp comic heroes, this is one worth taking a chance on. – THE SHADOW #1 // $3.99 // DYNAMITE COMICS

I was pretty bummed when the Vertigo Crime label was retired as it seemed like they saved most of the best stories for last and that more great things could have come. I also really liked the black and white format and the digest sized hardcovers that harkened back to the crime novels of the 40s and 50s. Shooters looks to be something of a spiritual successor to the line, as originally it was announced as a Vertigo Crime title (which had me excited, as this was AFTER the announcement of the line going defunct), but that announcement quietly disappeared and the book is now just your standard Vertigo graphic novel. What it does retain from the line though is the format, and from the synopsis, it sure sounds like it could have originally been intended for the Crime line: “Today’s battlefield isn’t just about the uniformed soldier in service to his country; there’s also the contractor, who answers to the corporation. Call them mercenaries, soldiers-for-hire, or private military operators, they are a new breed of combatant in today’s conflicts.SHOOTERS is the story of Terry Glass, a warrior whose spirit and soul has been hardened in countless battles. When a horrible accident shatters his world, Glass finds himself waging a private war on several fronts – against his career, his marriage, and ultimately, his faith.” Written by Eric Trautmann (DC’s Checkmate and currently writing the super fun Flash Gordon: Zeitgeist for Dynamite) and Brandon Jerwa with art from from the amazing Steve Lieber (Whiteout and the just-released Alabaster Wolves), this should be worthy of attention. – SHOOTERS HC // $22.99 // VERTIGO

Finally this week is an overlooked mini-series that just wrapped up over at Marvel a couple months ago and is now being released as a trade, Six Guns. It modernizes some of Marvel’s old Western characters and puts them in the middle of a war south of the border. If you’ve never read a book written by Andy Diggle (or you just read some of his Daredevil work, which is better forgotten), he’s sort of like the Michael Bay of comics, but if Michael Bay could actually helm an action flick with compelling characters and strong dialogue. You know, something to actually entertain you between the big action scenes (one of which includes a car being driven into a plane, which is just one crazy sequence you’ll get here). Six Guns in a lot of ways feels like Diggle’s breakout series, The Losers, only with Western characters as the main focal point at the center of all of the conspiracies that are swirling. Artist Davide Gianfelice brings all of the action to life in a cartoony, but very appealing way. While the ending sort of suggests this may have originally been a pitch for an ongoing series that was trimmed down to a mini-series as a test run (and the sales suggest this is all we’re going to get), it’s still a lot of fun, and if you need a break from all the superhero books out there and want to just read a self-contained, fast-paced story that’s a blast from cover to cover, give Six Guns a look. – SIX GUNS TPB // $14.99 // MARVEL COMICS
